4. Sully Doomed The Pandorans - Avatar

Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) was tasked with the mission to gain the trust of the Pandorans in order to improve alien-human relationships and feedback anything about the planet's infrastructure - basically like a blue David Attenborough. During his time on the planet, Sully noticed that the Pandorans' home was located directly underneath a large amount of the mineral (and I'm not making this up) Unobtanium. The military, of course, immediately made plans to frack the hell out of it (because 'Murica) and Sully joined together with the Pandorans to fight them off.

Why he shouldn't have bothered: As much as I hate to let the bad guys win, you've got to ask: is going to war over a tree really worth it? I get it's their home but surely stepping aside and finding a new tree is better than, you know, genocide.

The consequences: Although the Pandorans won and got to keep their big tree, you just know the military will be back and in greater number with more improved weapons and soldiers. And since they put up such a fight the first time round, I'm sure the executive order will be to take the tree and kill anything and everything blue and pointy.
