10 Movie Heroes Who Were Actually Suffering A Nervous Breakdown

8. John Trent - In The Mouth Of Madness

If someone offers you a book and says it will drive you crazy, the odds are you'll give it a go out of sheer curiosity (or at least check the user rating on Goodreads first). John Trent faces a similar dilemma when he reads from a book that might end the world and, while I won't give spoilers, he really shouldn't have read the book. Part of the fun of the movie is seeing someone who is completely in control of himself €“ and dismissive of the weird things happening €“ gradually unravel. His descent feels believable too, as the weirdness keeps piling on and the smug git he used to be becomes a sweaty, desperate wreck scribbling crosses on his padded cell. He's someone who has to deal with the insane gradually outnumbering the sane. And Ancient God's ripping their way through into reality. With that level of stress, the fact he only goes crazy towards the end is truly impressive.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
