10 Movie Heroes Who Were Actually Suffering A Nervous Breakdown
4. Robert Neville - I Am Legend
Being the last man alive cant be much fun; after the initial Sweet, Ive got the whole world to myself! feeling wears off theres the crushing loneliness to deal with, and the fear you might never see another living person again. Will Smith did a great job depicting this in I Am Legend, where his scientist gets to roam an empty New York looking for other survivors. He wisely has a routine to keep himself sane exercise, research, chatting up attractive mannequins but his mental health constantly weakens. A well-balanced person doesn't shoot a mannequin because it refuses to move, for example. His slow mental breakdown occasionally makes him hallucinate, which makes him so awkward and creepy around other survivors they become afraid of him. Its possible he even imagines the butterfly symbol in the glass towards the end that prompts him to needlessly sacrifice himself to save the other survivors. Lets hope so anyway; because otherwise that ending is really dumb.
