3. Max - Mad Max: Fury Road
Sure, life in the world of Mad Max should be fun with all the car chases and flamethrowers, but the cannibals and warlords suck the joy out of it. It left poor Max a mess, meaning that by the time of Fury Road he hasn't spoken to another human being for years. When stressed hes plagued by visions of the people he failed to save - including his own family - which isnt idle in the middle of a fight. Hes withdrawn within himself to the point that he communicates mainly in grunts, while a conversation seems to be genuinely painful. Thankfully, he gets some much-needed therapy throughout the story; shooting guns, smashing through enemies in a massive truck and having a cause to fight for. Oddly enough his own breakdown actually helps him out a couple of times; when he encourages the women to turn back and take the citadel, and again when he shields his head from an arrow at the right moment. This could be a sign hes taking back control of his sanity, with his visions guiding the way.
