9. Tony Montana - Al Pacino - Scarface
Everyone's favourite drug lord! Tony "Scarface" Montana wanted it all and he damn well took it, too, leaving us loving every moment. Scarface is essentially a rags to riches story with a violent overture. Starting life as a refugee, we see Tony at his weakest and his desire to push himself beyond his mediocre life and into the realms of his dreams is sort of horrifyingly elevating. Brutal, deadly and willing to put everything on the line because he knows that people in his position don't last long. His struggle is one we can all get behind despite the manic drug use and the violent carnage he leaves in his wake.
8. The Joker - Jack Nicolson/Heath Ledger - Batman/The Dark Knight
There are two very different takes on the character of the Joker in two very different films based from the same source material. We have each our favourite and this article is not a popularity contest, instead it is a celebration of both of these Jokers. The Clown Prince of Crime has always been a ludicrously violent sociopath, who see people more as victims than companions. So, why do we like him? Because he's damned funny and awesome is why. He doesn't fear getting involved in the action and has no apparent regard for his own life or that of anyone else. He picks his objectives and generally gets through it with a laugh and a smile - a manic, insane, deranged and disturbing laugh and a smile, but that is all part of the charm.
