10 Movie Moments That Pissed Fanboys Off The Most In 2015
3. It Completely Rips Off A New Hope - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
The Moment: Again, not so much a single moment as much as various aspects of the movie which are heavily indebted to the original Star Wars: a young, Force-sensitive protagonist is left on a desert planet, the villain is in search of a vital document given to a droid, Kylo Ren is literally an homage to Darth Vader, the human helping to transport the document is captured and tortured (Poe instead of Leia), General Hux is the new Moff Tarkin, Captain Phasma is the new Boba Fett, there's a new Death Star-like weapon with a similarly small vulnerability which requires a trench run to destroy, there's a cantina-like scene with weird aliens, a wise Jedi being searched for, and many, many more. Why The Fanboys Hate It: Because as divisive as Han Solo's (Harrison Ford) death was, as well as the highly limited appearance of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), it just seems incredibly lazy to crib so eagerly from the original movie. Fans were hoping for something with a similar tone and feel to the original trilogy but with fresh sensibilities thrown in, but instead, it played things very safe in order to establish a firm base moving forward, and was much less satisfying to watch as a result. Was it still enjoyable? Absolutely, and there won't be too many who will disagree with that, but it should've tried much harder, and if Episode VIII similarly just lazily reaches for the tropes of earlier movies, the fanboys will probably be a lot less forgiving about it.
