10 Movie Moments We Waited Years For (That Didn't Live Up To Expectations)
3. Darth Maul's Return - Solo: A Star Wars Story
The question of a Han Solo movie always came with the painful caveat that it would inevitably demystify a character whose impact had been fundamentally based on his enigmatic claims of greatness (and how impossible it was to prove them). We didn't need to see the Kessel Run, because the claim was better than the reality, but we got it anyway.
Still, the film DID give Star Wars fans something they'd been primed for years to expect - or at least to hope for - in the unexpected shape of Darth Maul's return. Because, in this universe, fan power is the best medicine possible for being chopped in half.
Whispers of his inclusion hit the press before the film's release and it was safe to say people got an awful lot more hyped.
But Then...
The reappearance amounts to a cameo setting up a sequel that already looks unlikely well before Maul's scene happens. So while it's great to have it confirmed that he's alive, the combination of an uninspiring scene and the unlikeliness of a pay-off gave it far less of an impact than the fans or the character deserved.
