A beast that can rattle even Gandalf must be a truly grave threat indeed. Despite the old wizard's reluctance, the Fellowship of the Ring venture down into the mines of Moria, where an ancient evil lies in wait.
Known as Durin's Bane, this beast is a Balrog of Morgoth, a ferocious demon from a time long past in Middle Earth. As J.R.R. Tolkien describes, the Balrog is a being of shadow and flame, and though you definitely know it's there in the movie, a lot of its body is shrouded in fire and smoke, making you wonder just how much of the hideous creature you can't know about.
Even in the movie after, when Gandalf and the Balrog fall down through the depths of Moria, there's not a whole lot more to see. But some forces in the world of fiction are just not meant for human understanding, and the mystery that surrounds the last of these primeval devils is perhaps best left as such
