Larry Clark's Kids is undeniably one of the most controversial films of the entire 1990s - a bewilderingly frank depiction of young teenagers exploring their sexuality in New York City.

The debate over the film's artistic merit - namely, whether it was exploitation or a fearless probe of teenage sexuality - still rages today, and is exemplified from Kids' harrowing opening scene.

The very first scene in the movie features a teenage boy, Telly (Leo Fitzpatrick), coercing a girl - who is both 12 years old and a virgin - into having sex with him.

Despite the girl's clear reservations about losing her virginity, Telly basically pressures her into acquiescing, yet in a "subtle" enough way that feels depressingly realistic.

To make matters worse, during the deed we hear the girl complain about the pain of the sex as Telly continues to thrust, and a voiceover from Telly has him explain how much he enjoys having sex with young virginal girls.

It's a stomach churning sequence and one that absolutely wants to confront the viewer with a deeply discomforting scenario, to make them consider what the youth of today might be up to in bedrooms around the world.

Things certainly get far more infuriating later in the movie, but this opening scene assures audiences of the enervating time ahead if they keep watching.
