If the character of Django's (Jamie Foxx) wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) seems a tad underwritten in Quentin Tarantino's masterful western, that's because the part was originally much larger before being whittled down by Tarantino during rewrites.

Broomhilda's original backstory saw her first sold into slavery as the mistress of Scotty Harmony, an overweight and inexperienced yet pleasant young man intended to be played by Jonah Hill.

However, Scotty ends up losing a card game to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), and after an argument over Candie's suspicious in-game conduct, Candie shoots him dead, taking Broomhilda for himself in the process.

To make matters worse, Candie then strips Broomhilda naked and whips her through the streets of Greenville, dovetailing into her predicamet in the final movie itself.

This certainly would've lent some added tragic shade to Broomhilda's already horrifying story, and made her a little less of a prize than she appears in the version of the film that actually got made.
