10 Movie Plot Twists Everyone Saw Coming

4. Dil Is A Man - The Crying Game

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vs_4-QQACo If you saw Stargate before you saw The Crying Game, there's a very good chance you would've been able to guess this twist, given that Jaye Davidson played a very clearly male character in the daft sci-fi flick, having previously played a pre-op transwoman in this brilliant thriller from Neil Jordan. Guessing the twist also becomes easier the later you see it; in 2013, we like to think of ourselves as very au fait, even with transgressive elements of our culture, and transgenderism, though still fringe, is not examined in the same way it was 20 years ago. I saw the film in the late 2000s for the first time, and was easily able to guess that Dil (Davidson) was a guy all along. However, I must confess that I cannot be sure whether the countless pop culture references to the twist - it really is Hollywood's worst-kept secret - helped me subconsciously realise. After all, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective of all films features a similar scene, in which Ace finds out that Sean Young's police officer is, in fact, a man, and a theme tune that sounds eerily similar to The Crying Game plays out. Still, it's an incredible twist; I would never deny the film that.
