You have to hand it to Microsoft's marketing team. Not only does Bill Gates' core software power PC's around the globe, it also seems to have found its way to the outer reaches of the galaxy... if you believe 1996's epic Independence Day.

Between Jeff Goldblum umm-ing his way through the script, and Will Smith suddenly becoming the Bad-Ass Prince of the Air, you're actually looking at a pretty good film all round. We have aliens, action, excitement, danger and irritating convenience to contend with, all in the space of 145 minutes.

Where's the convenience and what does Microsoft have to do with it? If you're asking that question, you've never seen the movie.

The stars concoct a daredevil ploy to take down the alien mothership's force fields by infecting the system with a computer virus - classic 90's hacker activity. Smith bravely volunteers to pilot a salvaged, refurbished alien ship (with conveniently no difficulty) and the virus is uploaded using a human designed storage device that the aliens are completely familiar with.

They probably use them all the time...
