10 Movie Promotional Publicity Stunts You Won't Believe

6. Studio Gives Away Free Cannabis - The Wackness (2008)

The Wackness It's the summer of '94 and the streets of New York are throbbing with hip hop beats and love. In this coming of age tale, Luke Shapiro has just graduated from high school and begins to sell marijuana. He trades it for treatment from an unorthodox therapist and falls in love with the shrink's out-of-his-league stepdaughter. So far, so Cheech and Chong. The film was produced on a $6,000,000 budget but only grossed $2,899,975 worldwide and even earned itself a Razzie nomination for Worst Supporting Actor. Although, given the film's premise, it's really not that surprising that it was such a flop, despite being quite well-received at the Sundance Film Festival. In an extremely bizarre promotional stunt (perhaps to recoup some losses through DVD sales) the producers had a 'golden ticket' in one of he first DVDs which entitled the winner to a trip for to to Amsterdam. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but the trip also included a complimentary free bag of weed upon arrival (guaranteed to make any winner very happy indeed). This gimmick obviously stirred up a huge pot of controversy with critics, claiming it glorified drug use. However, the producers and PR firm stood by their decision and released this statement: "The Wackness is all about people coming together through a love of weed, and we're just celebrating that fact."
