10 Movie Reviews Better Than The Movie Itself
8. Christmas Mail - Drew Gooden
Hallmark movies are a special breed of entertainment. They all adopt a pretty standard formula where cheesiness, bad writing, and bad acting come center stage. A businesswoman who doesn't believe in romance goes back to hometown and finds love, curmudgeonly old man finds happiness, Lifetime has a signature format they seem to prefer.
YouTuber Drew Gooden takes note of this fact and gives a prime example of it with his video on Christmas Mail. While you've surely seen a romantic comedy in your life, CM is unlike most other rom coms.
Whereas most movies in the genre follow a steadily-developing relationship while there's some sort of conflict, the writers of Christmas Mail seemed to forget several steps in the process, leading to the actual, you know, romantic side of the film.
Gooden's John Mulaney-like dryness is a perfect match for the absurd nature of CM, adding commentary and even quick recreations of moments from the movie.
Much of the movie's pure nonsensical nature speaks for itself, but Gooden is as excellent a straight man as ever for the material, leading to a nearly 30-minute play-by-play that never ceases to make you laugh.
