10 Movie Roles That Made Great Actors Look Like They'd Gone Insane

4. Roberto Benigni - Pinocchio (2002)

Roberto Benigni Oh, God. Oh, no. Oh, man. How did this actually happen? How did this legitimately occur, to the point where people got together, agreed to make it, and eventually found their way onto a movie set, where they all stood around and watched as an Oscar-winning actor got into a suit that should have been fitted on a child, and pranced around pretending he was Pinocchio? Yes, this is the passion project that Roberto Benigni set is sights upon following Life is Beautiful. Pinocchio is weird. Really weird. I mean, the movie is weird anyway, but it's made super-weird by the fact that Benigni genuinely thought it was some kind of masterstroke to cast himself as the main character, who - for all intents and purposes - is supposed to be a child. Watching this once respected actor playing this role is beyond creepy - it's almost as if he set out to sabotage his career. I would bet money on the fact that Benigni was, say, 70% insane when he made this.
