10 Movie Roles That Pissed Actors Off
1. Adrien Brody - Cpl. Fife (The Thin Red Line)
Terrence Malick's stunning war epic The Thin Red Line is categorically an ensemble piece with one of the most enviable casts of any movie ever, including the likes of Sean Penn, Adrien Brody, George Clooney, John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Elias Koteas, Nick Nolte, John C. Reilly, and John Travolta.
However, when Adrien Brody was cast in the role of Cpl. Fife, Fife was actually the movie's protagonist, and as such Brody was present for the majority of the movie's 100-day shoot.
But when Brody attended a screening of the film, he saw that Fife's role had been cut down to just two lines of dialogue and around five minutes of screen time, Malick having significantly reworked the story during editing.
Virtually every actor who worked on the film had their role cut down or even removed entirely, but given that Brody signed up believing he'd be the front-and-center character, his disappointment feels incredibly valid.
Of the experience, an understandably sour Brody said to The Independent in 2001:
"I was so focused and professional, I gave everything to it, and then to not receive everything... in terms of witnessing my own work. It was extremely unpleasant because I'd already begun the press for a film that I wasn't really in. Terry obviously changed the entire concept of the film. I had never experienced anything like that... You know the expression 'Don't believe the hype'? Well, you shouldn't."
