The entire point of body doubles is to blend into the scene and give no reason for the audience to assume they're watching anyone but the actual actor themselves.

And so, using an actual, recognisable actor as a body double is certainly a risky prospect, although one which ingeniously fixed a tricky production issue on Thor: The Dark World.

The movie's mid-credits scene sees Thor (Chris Hemsworth) return to Earth and be reunited with his love Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), at which point the pair share a passionate smooch.

Except, this scene was shot long after principal photography had wrapped, and because Natalie Portman wasn't available to shoot the scene, a body double was required to plant the liplock on Hemsworth instead.

Hemsworth was given several models to choose from, though ultimately surmised that it made more sense for his real-life wife, Elsa Pataky, to fill in instead.

And so, Pataky was given Portman's wardrobe and fitted with a wig, and the rest is history.

Despite Pataky being a known actress in her own right, the fact that her build and facial structure are extremely similar to Portman's, and that the shot is framed to only ever show the side profile of her face, ensured she could quite effortlessly take her place with audiences being none the wiser.

Of the screen kiss shared between the real-life couple, Portman herself tellingly said, "That's why it was so passionate."
