Shrek was in production long enough that most of the voice work for the title character had actually been recorded by 1997 - a whole four years before it was finally released.

And long before Mike Myers came along, Shrek was actually voiced by the late, great Chris Farley, who as leaked clips of his performance show, played the part with an American accent.

Farley passed away in 1997 before completing work on the film, however, resulting in his work being thrown out and Myers eventually being hired to replace him.

However, it was important to Myers that he make the character his own, and so in addition to insisting that the script be rewritten to reflect the casting change, he requested that he re-record the part with a Scottish accent after initially recording it in an American one.

Producer Jeffrey Katzenberg ultimately agreed to have Myers re-record the lines, costing $4 million in reworked animation to fit the new voice, yet given that Shrek became an overnight pop-culture phenomenon that's generated billions of dollars for DreamWorks, it was most certainly worth the hassle.
