10 Movie Scenes DELETED Because They Were Too Good
5. Magneto's Polish Lullaby - X-Men: Apocalypse
Given the increasingly unwieldy scale of so many modern superhero flicks, it can be a tough task juggling both the tone and scale, as director Bryan Singer found out while editing the wildly divisive X-Men: Apocalypse.
You'll likely remember the devastating sequence where Magneto's (Michael Fassbender) wife and daughter are accidentally shot and killed by the police during a tense standoff, but the scene originally went on a little longer.
On the film's home video release, a deleted extension of the scene shows a distraught Magneto singing a solemn Polish lullaby while cradling his dead daughter.
With commentary accompanying the scene, Singer called it "the most heartbreaking cut" he'd ever made on a film, explaining that Fassbender's "beautiful" performance "pushed the envelope of emotion" beyond the bounds that the film could support.
Basically, Singer felt that despite Fassbender absolutely knocking the scene out of the park, it was just too much emotion at this point in the movie - and if we're reading between the lines, it further drags out a film that's already trying to pack a ludicrous amount into its 144-minute runtime.
Singer added that he cut the scene with "mixed feelings and regret," and from watching it, it's clear that Fassbender poured everything he had into selling Magneto's grief.
