10 Movie Scenes WAY More Disturbing Than Intended

7. Vera Becomes A Cyborg - Superman III

Superman III gets a ton of well-deserved criticism for its overtly comedic, slapstick-infused tone, which makes it all the more surprising that it also features the most unexpectedly queasy sequence in the entire four-film franchise.

When villain Ross Webster's (Robert Vaughn) supercomputer becomes self-aware near the end of the movie, it grabs hold of Ross' sister Vera (Annie Ross) and pulls her towards it, where she's forcibly transformed into a human-cyborg-zombie thing.

The sequence isn't long by any means, but watching Vera have metal grafted onto her flesh against her will is gnarly enough to feel like it better belongs in a David Cronenberg film than an otherwise goofy Superman movie.

Actress Annie Ross' blood-curdling screams of anguish do a frankly fantastic job of selling the horror of the moment - perhaps too well for a superhero film aimed at children, even.
