10 Movie Scenes You Didn't Realise Were Tricking You

8. Pepper's Ghost Brings Pesci's Fiery Head To Life - Home Alone

Underwater Movie
Twentieth Century Fox

In a film jam-packed with visuals as side-splitting as they are cringe-inducing, Home Alone required more than a few minds as devilishly creative as one Kevin McCallister in order to successfully and safely execute a number of these shocking stunts.

And up there with the most jaw-dropping of all is undoubtedly the moment Joe Pesci's Harry has his head set ablaze upon trying to break into the lad's house in that first film. But what at first appeared to be the legendary actor putting his noggin on the line for the sake of a laugh, actually required a touch more nuance and skill than you initially thought.

Using something known as "Pepper's Ghost", production designer John Muto crafted the illusion that requires a piece of glass being placed at a 45 degree angle in the middle of the scene. Fire was then sent in the direction of a black dummy head on one side of the glass, with Pesci hitting a mark on set that made it look like he himself was being incinerated after blocking out the dummy.
