It's safe to say that the original Ghostbusters is one of the most beloved movies of all time, and after suffering through disappointing sequels and reboots, fans have spent literally decades clinging onto hope that a third flick will eventually get made with the original cast.

It's partly a pipe dream, but original stars like Dan Ackroyd are also to blame, talking up new scripts that were being written over the years and seemingly placing the failure to launch on Bill Murray.

Hope was all but extinguished entirely when original cast member Harold Ramis died in 2014, and Hollywood instead pushed ahead with an all-female reboot. Still, a whole new incarnation didn't stop fans pining for a third movie that's almost definitely not going to happen. Even though cashing in on nostalgia is all the rage, it's clear that Bill Murray wants nothing less than to cross the streams one more time.
