10 Movie Sequels JUST Announced
7. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2
Some movie announcements can come out of nowhere and take you completely by surprise. Take for example the trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, that came completely out of nowhere and was a shock to everyone. Then, there are those that are on completely the other end of the spectrum.
These are the films that you would be surprised if there wasn't a second outing to follow, one of them being The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Nintendo's second cinematic take on the mega gaming franchise (after a disastrous effort in 1993 starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo), raked in over $1.3 billion in 2023, making a sequel all but guaranteed.
At the 2024 Mario Day event, it was announced that the world of The Super Mario Bros. was expanding, and though technically there was no mention of the word 'sequel' in the video clip, it's hard to imagine anything else. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are both back to direct, and it makes more sense to capitalise on a sequel before going into spin-off territory.
The world expanding may be referencing the original movie's post-credit scene that teased an appearance of the franchise's resident dinosaur, Yoshi. It's not difficult to picture a big chunk of the story taking place away from the Mushroom Kingdom on Yoshi's Island. The only thing anyone truly knows at the moment, is that it will be released on April 5, 2026 - just shy of three years after the original.
