The Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito-starring comedy Twins was a massive commercial smash in 1988, grossing $216.6 million against a mere $18 million budget.

Back in 2012, Universal announced development of a sequel, Triplets, which would one-up the original premise by throwing Eddie Murphy into the mix as Schwarzenegger and DeVito's other long lost sibling. Original director Ivan Reitman was also set to produce.

Despite the inherent hilarity of the concept and A-list trifecta at the forefront, Triplets slid into development hell by the mid-2010s as little forward-progress was made.

But in September 2021, it finally seemed like Triplets was actually going to happen, with the script apparently complete and shooting pencilled in for a 2022 start. Reitman was set to direct while Tracy Morgan would replace Murphy in the third lead role.

But tragedy stuck when Reitman unexpectedly passed away last February. The most recent update came from Schwarzenegger, who noted last March that Reitman's death unsurprisingly caused production to be suspended while the producers seek out a replacement director.

Schwarzenegger didn't sound terribly confident about Triplets' chances of getting made, noting it as more of an "if" than a "when," and given how poorly comedies - and especially comedy sequels - have fared at the box office in recent times, it's easy to appreciate why Universal might ultimately shutter it.
