The rumour that a sequel to this hit Robin Williams comedy was in development circulated for years but never eventuated. Hiding in plain sight though, was a storyline so obvious, it makes you question why so much time was spent labouring over something so simple.

The original film sees the main character, Daniel Hillard, turn the persona of Scottish housekeeper Mrs Doubtfire into a children's TV character. A good sequel could have seen Daniel dealing with the studio behind the show not wanting an audience of kids to know the character is just a man in drag.

Of course, because we have to have conflict in our movies, the secret would inevitably be revealed. Daniel Hillard would become the talk of the town, as he confronts angry parents, and a network that wants to take him off the air to avoid controversy. Taking this approach to a sequel would have been a fantastic way of exploring new themes of prejudice and fame, whilst keeping true to the original themes of parenting.

A sequel was eventually announced, but due to Robin Williams’ tragic passing, we may never know just what the writers had planned.
