10 Movie Sequels That Just Copied The Original
6. Hostel Part II
Coming after The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and Saw (2004), Eli Roth’s Hostel arrived at just the right time to exploit the audience’s desire to see young folks being tortured and hacked up by sickos. In fact, the film was such a smash hit that Roth remade it 2 years later with female leads.
It calls itself a sequel and picks up where its predecessor left off, but after killing the sole survivor of the first film, Hostel II tells the same story with a cunning twist. Instead of 3 guys travelling to Slovakia where they encounter a pair of femme fatales, we get a story about 3 women that arrive in the region and fall afoul of 2 American men who’re there to torture and kill strangers.
The film even repeats the original’s gimmick of having a director associated with extreme cinema make a cameo appearance: in Part I, we saw Takashi Miike (Audition) as a businessman at the warehouse, so Part II gives us Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust) as “The Italian Cannibal” who’s shown feasting on a victim’s leg.
