Until near the end, this 3rd sequel to Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre plays more like a remake. The plot involves a young woman (Rene Zellwegger) whose friends are hacked up for barbecue by a family of cannibals and writer/ director Kim Henkel (who also co-wrote the original) recycles several moments from Hooper’s movie.

There’s a sledgehammer murder, a dinner party and a sequence where one family member is berated for allowing Leatherface to cut through the front door while pursuing a victim, all of which are recreated without irony. Henkel seems to know what he’s doing, too, hence the number of cameos made by actors from the original.

In the final scene, no less than three actors from the 1974 film appear. There’s John Dugan (Grandpa) as a cop, Paul Partain (Franklin) as an orderly and, billed as “Anonymous”, Marilyn Burns (Sally) as a patient on a gurney. Dugan asks Zellweger, “Do you know that girl?” and….the film ends.
