The highly publicised defamation trial between Hollywood stars Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard has recently concluded, with a ruling in Depp’s favour. His supporters have a renewed sense of hope that Depp could have his role as Captain Jack Sparrow reinstated for a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film, after he was fired by Disney following Heard’s public allegations against him.

This controversy surrounding the lead star is one of the factors that have kept Pirates 6 from moving forward. After Depp was quietly removed from future plans for the film series, the studio began working on a new direction to take, including a spin-off film starring Margot Robbie.

Since Johnny Depp’s lead performance was such a draw for audiences, it can be hard to imagine what the franchise would look like without him. Reports have been circulating that Disney is offering Depp a $301 million deal to return, although a representative of his has disputed this.

Until Disney can work out a game plan, the future of Pirates will remain uncertain. Yet it’s entirely possible that the fandom will reject future sequels if they proceed without the involvement of Depp.
