10 Movie Sequels That Keep Getting Teased (But Probably Won't Happen)

Gremlins is another example of an incomplete trilogy, although in this case it’s partially by design. Director Joe Dante followed up his Christmas horror comedy classic with Gremlins 2: The New Batch in 1990, a sequel which leaned heavily into the zany comedy of the first one, even including animated Looney Tunes sections from the legendary Chuck Jones.

While the movie wasn’t intended to be the second of a trilogy, that hasn’t stopped discussions of a third film from popping up every now and then in the 30+ years since.

Currently, fans are awaiting the release of HBO Max animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, a prequel exploring the origins of Gizmo. While it’s taking precedence at the moment, the show has not ruled out the possibility of a third cinematic rendition, although Dante’s comments that he made the second film ‘sequel-proof’ may cast some doubt.

Even if the third film never materialises, or takes years to do so, there is plenty of Gremlins content on the horizon, including a rumoured live-action series, alongside the upcoming animated prequel show.
