10 Movie Sequels That Keep Getting Teased (But Probably Won't Happen)

It’s been seven years since George Miller brought Mad Max back to the big screen, and back into the cultural conversation, with Fury Road, which saw Tom Hardy take over from Mel Gibson as the Aussie antihero, starring alongside Charlize Theron as the buzzcut-rocking warrior Furiosa.

While it didn’t perform quite as well as expected at the box office, the film received rave reviews and has gone on to become a modern cult classic. Surely that’s enough to warrant a sequel.

Well, following in the franchise’s tradition of leaving long gaps between instalments, the next Mad Max keeps not happening. At least it has a title - Mad Max: The Wasteland - but Miller has stated that there is no script, or even a complete plot idea. Another factor that may be holding things back is Hardy and Theron’s on-set feud, during what was apparently a nightmare shoot.

Production is currently underway on the prequel Furiosa, starring Anya Taylor-Joy. As with the Gremlins show, this project is demanding more of Miller’s attention than another Mad Max. He likely won’t jump at the chance once this film is completed, so it’s probably better to enjoy Furiosa than wait impatiently for the return of Tom Hardy’s Max.
