Top Gun is one of the most distinctive films of the 1980s, a testosterone-fuelled action extravaganza defined by its Tom Cruise-led cast of young up-and-comers, Tony Scott's gorgeously slick visuals, that soundtrack, and its undeniable penchant for homoeroticism.

A Top Gun sequel was talked-up many times over the years, though Tony Scott's death in 2012 seemed to largely put the kibosh on those plans.

However, by 2017 it appeared that the project had finally picked up momentum. Top Gun: Maverick finally started shooting in mid-2018, with Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) directing, with Cruise and Val Kilmer returning alongside a new ensemble cast including Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, and Jennifer Connelly.

Was It Worth The Wait?

The film is still awaiting release so we'll have to wait and see, though between its visionary director and top-notch cast, it certainly has a lot going for it.

In the very least, the marketing suggests a stylish blockbuster, and one that'll hopefully dine out on all the nostalgia fans have for the original.

We'll all get to see the end result for ourselves on June 26.
