Ridley Scott's Blade Runner is one of the most acclaimed sci-fi films of all time, and with damn good reason. However, despite its esteem among critics and sci-fi enthusiasts, it was a box office dud, ensuring most fans never really expected to see Hollywood roll the dice on a sequel.

But back in 2015, a Blade Runner sequel was finally confirmed, with Denis Villeneuve replacing Ridley Scott as director while the cast would be led by Ryan Gosling and returning star Harrison Ford. Needless to say, fans were cautiously optimistic.

Was It Worth The Wait?

Yes, and then some. Blade Runner 2049 wasn't simply a satisfactory sequel but quite arguably better than its predecessor, with some of the most entrancingly lavish visuals ever produced for a major blockbuster, alongside a surprisingly affecting and meaningful story which cleverly subverted over-familiar "Chosen One" narratives.

In a disappointing yet oddly appropriate outcome, though, the film failed to connect with a wider audience and was a box office disappointment. Like the original, however, it's likely to endure as a cult masterpiece in the decades to come.
