10 Movie Sequels That Will NEVER Be Made

4. The John Carter Trilogy

Kill Bill
Disney

It's quite comforting to know that even a company as big and successful as Disney drops a real clanger every now and then.

One of the biggest flops in the history of the House of Mouse is 2012's John Carter, the story of a Confederate soldier who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars one day. Also, Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author of the original books, is in it, for some reason.

You can see why it tanked.

The film didn't review horribly, but a barebones marketing campaign saw $200 million drop out of Walt's bank account. Nowadays, you rarely hear about Mr. Carter or his Martian exploits, but this wasn't always the plan.

This was supposed to be the start of a franchise, with at least two more films planned by director Andrew Stanton. Unfortunately, nothing could survive a box office mauling that savage, and now there's basically zero chance of this trilogy ever getting made.

Stanton's career recovered nicely though, as he went on to direct Finding Dory. As for Taylor Kitsch, the actor who played Carter, he's expressed interest about returning to the character several times.

Let it go, Taylor, it's never going to happen.
