10 Movie Sequels With Massively Improved Rotten Tomatoes Scores
2. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (22%) To Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (83%)
Score Difference: 61%
Considering how fast-paced and energetic the recent trilogy of Star Trek films is, it's hard to imagine a time when they felt quite dull and lifeless, but 1989's The Final Frontier managed to (disappointingly) fit that bill.
Coming from first-time director William Shatner (who also starred as Kirk), the fifth Trek film showed clear signs of his inability to handle a major production, with uninspired action sequences and poor special effects, and despite plenty of humour, Final Frontier's negative reception nearly sunk the series altogether.
Things needed to change for the followup, and change they did. Bringing back director Nicholas Meyer - who previously helmed The Wrath Of Khan, the best Trek movie ever - The Undiscovered Country was a fine sendoff for the original crew, with a compelling mystery plot and much-improved visuals combining to create one of the most downright enjoyable Trek films you can watch.
The movie earned a strong 83% Rotten Tomatoes score, besting its predecessor by a whopping 61%. Incidentally, this isn't the only major score jump in the franchise: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (44%) to Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan (88%) is another.
