10 Movie Sequels You Didn't Know Were Coming In 2018

7. Sherlock Gnomes

The biggest question surrounding Sherlock Gnomes (sequel to 2011's Gnomeo & Juliet) isn't, surprisingly, 'why does this need to exist?' but rather... 'how on Earth did the casting director manage to convince Johnny Depp to voice the titular character?'

The original film obviously did well enough to warrant a followup, but production company Rocket Pictures are hardly on the same level as Pixar, Disney or even DreamWorks, and the franchise itself has that direct-to-DVD stench about it, so the fact that it's landed one of the biggest stars on the planet is a remarkable, somewhat confusing feat.

Sherlock Gnomes will follow the famous detective as he investigates the mysterious disappearances of other garden gnomes. James McAvoy and Emily Blunt will return as Gnomeo and Juliet, respectively, and the great Tim Curry will voice Watson, Holmes' faithful companion.

The fact that the film was initially slated for January tells you precisely how much confidence distributor Paramount has in the project, and though they've since moved it to March, this feels like the film that's going to fill that throwaway family adventure spot for the next Easter holiday.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
