Given the astronomical success Mamma Mia enjoyed (over $609 million worldwide on a $52 million budget) it's difficult to understand why it's taken ten years for a sequel to materialize.

As we already mentioned when discussing Bad Boys For Life, sequels that wait too long generally underperform - it's best to strike while the iron is hot, and pump out another instalment within two or three years.

But maybe this is a case of better late than never. Mamma Mia is that type of timeless, feelgood movie that can be enjoyed by anyone of any age at any time, and the same can be said of ABBA's music; they've already proven their ability to appeal to multiple generations, given that they formed in the '70s and are still popular today.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! is expected to feature the original cast - Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, etc - along with a handful of new faces. The sequel will also include several ABBA tunes that weren't in the original, though some of the more popular tracks may make a return.

Plot details aren't yet known, but with a release date set for July 2018, it won't be long before more information leaks out.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
