Were it not for an unfortunate on-set accident (which resulted in the hospitalisation of star Dylan O'Brien), we'd have already seen Maze Runner: The Death Cure by now.

O'Brien was injured in March 2016 while filming a scene, rendering the movie's early 2017 release slot impossible to hit, as the actor required time to fully recover from his injuries.

Fortunately, production resumed earlier this year and wrapped last June, and with the film firmly in the can, it will be able to safely make its new February 2018 date. However, this delay has caused the film to slip out of the spotlight and into a mild state of development hell, and Fox would be wise to begin a marketing push as early as possible to let people know it's coming.

The Death Cure is the third and final instalment in the YA adventure series, and will find Thomas (O'Brien) and the rest of the Gladers attempting to hunt down a cure for the disease known as 'The Flare', all the while facing off against the sinister organisation, WCKD.

The first Maze Runner was a surprisingly solid adventure film that suffered from a severe case of sequel baiting, with its ending pretending to answer all the big questions - like, why the kids were locked up in a giant maze - but, if you stop and think about it, nothing gets answered to a satisfying degree, presumably so the filmmakers could pad out the sequels.

Hopefully, The Death Cure wraps things up neatly and concisely, avoiding the second movie's meandering pace and clearly addressing the lingering questions we all want answers to. If it can hit both those points, this has the potential to be the best in the series.
