10 Movie Sequels You Didn't Know Were Coming In 2023

1. Ghostbusters: Firehouse

Fans of the Ghostbusters franchise have a lot to look forward to over the next couple of years. Not only is an animated spinoff film (as well as an animated spinoff series) in development, but a direct sequel to 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife is moving along at a rapid pace, with Sony recently confirming that it will open in December 2023.

Currently going by the code name "Firehouse," Afterlife director Jason Reitman will return to helm this next instalment, which will take the ghostly action back to the original film's New York City setting.

Little else is known about the project at this stage, other than the fact that it will continue the stories of the young 'busters we met in Afterlife.

That primetime Christmas release date is a sign that Sony has a lot of faith in the project though (it's currently scheduled against the Timothée Chalamet-led Wonka prequel and the up-in-the-air Star Trek 4), and after the critical and commercial success of Afterlife - which managed to find an audience, even when the COVID-19 situation was a significant barrier for movie releases - it's easy to see why.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
