10 Movie Sequels You Have No Idea Were Just Released
2. R.I.P.D. 2: Rise Of The Damned
Remember R.I.P.D.? No? You're not alone.
Despite being adapted from a hit comic book and starring the inspired pairing of Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds, this $150 million action tentpole came and went in a zip in 2013, being summarily panned by critics and grossing just $78.3 million worldwide.
Even with the film being a vague, cloudy memory at best for most who watched it upon release, Universal has nevertheless pushed forward with a sequel nobody asked for, released under their aforementioned dumping ground label Universal 1440 Entertainment.
And so, we come to R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned, which despite its numbered title is technically a prequel, set in 1876 with Burn Notice star Jeffrey Donovan playing a younger iteration of Bridges' grizzled gunslinger Roy Pulsipher.
Given that Universal only released a single 30-second teaser prior to its release, you couldn't be blamed for believing they were sending the "sequel" out to die, and considering the scathing early reviews - save for scattered praise for Donovan's reliable performance - that seems totally on the money.
It is the textbook example of a "nobody asked for this" continuation of a dreadful film that audiences soundly rejected.
