10 Movie Soundtracks Better Than The Film

9. Marie Antoinette

At the dawn of the '00s, it may have looked like Sofia Coppola would follow in her father's footsteps into directing. Though her acting chops in her father's the Godfather Part III was nothing to write home about, her turn behind the camera with Lost in Translation started her off on the right track towards stardom. Building off that momentum, Coppola re-entered the fold with Marie Antoinette, which was met with a resounding...meh.

The movie on the surface is pretty divisive amongst critics, but one thing no could argue with was the inventive use of music in the film.

Much like the Great Gatsby did with hip hop, the entire soundtrack recontextualizes the time period by putting post punk-flavored rock music into the 18th century setting. It takes some getting used to at first, but once you hear something like "What Ever Happened" by the Strokes blaring out over the French countryside, it ends up making sense in its own weird sort of way.

There might not be anything historically accurate about this film soundtrack, but it does a better job at establishing the tone for our titular Antoinette, who would probably put something like New Order right alongside Vivaldi if she were familiar with both.

Marie Antoinette might be a relic from the '00s, but try this soundtrack on for size if you need a taste of something more off-the-wall.
