10. Dr. Lillian Thurman in Donnie Darko
Donnie Darko is a wonderfully strange, genre defying film starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Donnie, son to straight edge suburban parents. Donnie escapes death with the help of an invisible friend, a large rabbit thats a lot more creepy and a lot less cuddly than most. Donnies parents decide to send him to see a 200-dollar per hour psychiatrist, played by Katherine Ross, who places Donnie under hypnosis. Its clearly not the best form of treatment for him; in fact it complicates his life further. Theres a rather embarrassing scene where Donnie reverts to a childlike state and is only able to talk about sex. He unbuttons his jeans and starts to masturbate. In the midst of this Dr. Thurman decides to ask about his family. Donnie disputes this inappropriately timed question by saying: thats gross. Aside from this lovely slice of awkwardness Dr. Lilian does not really give any insight into Donnies condition (arguably the movie is so trippy we dont really know if he has a condition). Her questions are vague and un-confrontational. Theres also the matter of her rather bizarre monologue about the sky opening up. Film buffs believe this is either a hallucination or Frank (the bunny) speaking through her, either way it doesnt make her a very helpful doctor.
