10 Movie Therapists That Would Damage You Worse Than Before

10. Dr. Lillian Thurman in Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko is a wonderfully strange, genre defying film starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Donnie, son to straight edge suburban parents. Donnie escapes death with the help of an invisible friend, a large rabbit that€™s a lot more creepy and a lot less cuddly than most. Donnie€™s parents decide to send him to see a 200-dollar per hour psychiatrist, played by Katherine Ross, who places Donnie under hypnosis. It€™s clearly not the best form of treatment for him; in fact it complicates his life further. There€™s a rather embarrassing scene where Donnie reverts to a childlike state and is only able to talk about sex. He unbuttons his jeans and starts to masturbate. In the midst of this Dr. Thurman decides to ask about his family. Donnie disputes this inappropriately timed question by saying: €œthat€™s gross€. Aside from this lovely slice of awkwardness Dr. Lilian does not really give any insight into Donnie€™s condition (arguably the movie is so trippy we don€™t really know if he has a condition). Her questions are vague and un-confrontational. There€™s also the matter of her rather bizarre monologue about the sky opening up. Film buffs believe this is either a hallucination or Frank (the bunny) speaking through her, either way it doesn€™t make her a very helpful doctor.
