10 Movie Titles With Ridiculous German Translations
5. Die Hard
German Title: Stirb Langsam
Translation: Die Slowly
One of the key ways in which movies get people flocking to the cinemas is with a snappy yet intriguing movie title and Die Hard is the typical example of what an action film title should look like - simple yet ingenious enough to inspire the "lone fighter against terrorists" concept that reigned throughout the 90s' action movie scene (Under Siege, Passenger 57 or Air Force One)
Unfortunately, the movie spawned three insanely bad sequels which got even worse and worse in succession with each sequel deviating further away from the original charm that made us initially root for the bad ass cop.
Admittedly, translating the film literally wouldn't have had the same impact as the original title but...Die Slowly?; one can only wonder if the translators had actually watched the movie before they came up with a name for it.
But of course there is always the possibility that the Germans took it to heart when they realized that all the bad guys were named Fritz, Heinrich, Theo, Hans etc. and thus, wished to give the all american hero a slow, torturous, Promethean death treatment without any chances of reincarnation.
