10 Movie Trailer Cliches Everyone Is Tired Of
8. Scenes Taken Totally Out Of Context
Though select movies will alter the context of a movie in order to safeguard spoilers or cleverly mislead audiences, most of the time it's done without much effort at all and doesn't really fool anyone but the most absent-minded viewers.
Frustratingly this can often toy with audience expectations in a negative way and convey a tone that isn't at all representative of what the final film is.
It's nice when a trailer doesn't just spoil everything and keeps specific details to a minimum, but lazily trying to trick audiences just comes off as trying both too hard and not enough at the same time.
Examples: The trailers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi tried to imply that Rey (Daisy Ridley) might join Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) despite the two characters clearly being featured in two separate scenes spliced together.
Also, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) grimly proclaiming, "Nothing lasts forever" in an Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, which actually has a totally different and more innocuous context in the final film.
