10 Movie Trailers Released BEFORE FX Was Added
6. Star Trek: First Contact
Unlike just about every other trailer on this list, the first teaser for Star Trek: First Contact didn't feature blatantly unfinished VFX shots or shots entirely bereft of effects elements, but instead filled the gaps by recycling existing footage.
Countless effects-heavy shots in the trailer were blatantly cribbed from various televised iterations of Star Trek and also the previous film itself, Generations.
Particularly obvious is the shot of the future Enterprise-D flying away from an exploding U.S.S. Pasteur, as is taken from The Next Generation's series finale "All Good Things," as well as countless shots of the Borg pilfered from an assortment of Trek episodes, and the Enterprise-D's drive section being destroyed in Generations.
It's a neat teaser all the same and certainly does a great job selling the movie, even if swotted-up Trekkies easily noticed the ruse.
But with the trailer dropping in 1996 before online movie trailers were a common thing, at least the fans weren't able to obsessively pore over every single HD frame and kick up a big stink about it.
