9. Kill Bill

When it comes to bad-ass action movie heroines few are as single-minded and ruthless as Uma Thurman's Bride, star of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill movies. Vol. 1 provides the impetus for the revenge plot and sets the tone for Tarantino's mash-up of kung fu, Western, exploitation and Yakuza genres, culminating in a gloriously bloody massacre held together by Yuen Woo-ping's effortlessly graceful choreography. The enigmas which permeated Vol. 1 become clear in the sequel, as the Bride draws closer to tracking down the titular leader of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. Backstories and hidden motivations are revealed until finally the Bride comes face to face with Bill for the final showdown. By the conclusion, it seems as if the story has nowhere else to go... When can we expect the final instalment? While Vol. 2 seems to wrap things up, Tarantino has long said that he planned it as "my Dollars Trilogy". Speaking shortly after wrapping in 2004, he said, I've already got the whole mythology: Sofie Fatale will get all of Bill's money. She'll raise Nikki, who'll take on The Bride. Nikki deserves her revenge every bit as much as The Bride deserved hers." Sadly, he's blown hot and cold on the idea of Kill Bill Vol. 3 in the years since, and as things stand at the moment the chances of it happening are unlikely.
