10 Movie Villain Twists Everyone Hated

For many years, Alan Moore's graphic novel was considered 'unfilmable' with directors including Terry Gilliam and David Hayter being unable to get the film off the ground. Finally after the success of 300, Zack Snyder managed a faithful, if difficult to sit through version.

For purists, seeing the movie at all was perhaps a victory but nearly everyone agreed that the final twist of Adrian Veidt A.K.A. Ozymandias being behind the massacre of millions, along with the death of his compatriot The Comedian was terribly handled.

In part this was due to a change in how the evil plot worked, in the book it is an creature grown by Veidt, similar to those in Cloverfield that takes out New York. Perhaps that movie coming out first forced a change, but the idea of setting up Doctor Manhattan, who had just rededicated himself to saving humanity as the villain alienated nearly everyone who watched it, fan and newcomer alike.

While the idea of the team having to go along with the consequences remained, it was a step too far that the one character who could do good for the world was being blamed. Of course Rorscach's journal may solve things, but it could also be ignored, leaving the world in peace but on the blood of millions of innocents.

Arguably, the casting also led to this falling flat. Matthew Goode was an interesting Veidt but unconvincing when it mattered most. The again, considering this was the role Tom Cruise had wanted in the previous iterations, we may have gotten away with one.

Ultimately though, Watchmen failed because they botched this twist so badly that it's been 10 years since anyone has attempted anything with the property on screen. Let's all hope the upcoming TV show does it better.
