10 Movie Villain ‘Twists’ We Saw Coming A Mile Off
6. George "Mac" McHale - Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of TheCrystal Skull
In Raiders Of The Lost Ark the Nazis locate Indy and the Ark on the tramp steamer through their own methods. In The Last Crusade the Nazis find the temple where the Holy Grail is hidden using their own methods. In Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull the Russians reach Akator through the most convoluted, plot-device character Lucas and Spielberg could come up with.
In a film full of irritating characters, Ray Winstone's Mac stood out thanks to a sheer lack of importance to events. Introduced in the opening as a double agent for the Russians, then later a triple agent for the Americans, then as a quadruple agent actually working for the Russians, then finally a selfish lone player after as much gold as possible (because that's the only reason people become evil), his arc is incredibly convoluted for someone whose character begins and ends with "played by Ray Winstone".
The first reveal takes us by surprise because we've just met him, but once he starts to play Pong with allegiances it's clear Mac's only here to make sure both sides never fall too far behind the other. When it's revealed Mac was dropping clues for the Russians the feeling is less of surprise and more of disappointment that the film took the incredibly obvious route.
