10 Movie Villains Impossible To Take Seriously

2. Bennett (Commando)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19R2fDXCzcM Commando is one of the most ludicrously entertaining action films ever made, and this is in large part because of Vernon Wells' performance as the pudgy, chainmail-clad, Freddie Mercury-looking Aussie bad guy Bennett. It's hard to know what the producers of the film were thinking in casting Wells; it's tough enough as it is to look imposing when you're having to compete with a protagonist played by Austrian Oak himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, so how about picking someone who at least looks like they went to the gym occasionally? Though the result is somehow brilliant and I wouldn't change it for the world - the one-liners are hilarious - Bennett is a terrible villain, evidenced by the fact he doesn't do a scrap of fighting until the final stand-off between himself and Arnie's John Matrix. Right on cue, there's some bizarrely homo-erotic wordplay about twisting knives, before Bennett ends up with a comically over-sized metal pipe lobbed through his abdomen, followed by Matrix uttering the immortal one-liner, "Let off some steam, Bennett".
