In Steven Spielberg's career-defining blockbuster, Jaws, the citizens of Amity Island are horrified to learn a Great White resides in the waters. When the shark kills several swimmers, Sheriff Brody and his crew take it upon themselves to slaughter the toothy beastie.

Even though the shark is one of the most terrifying monsters in cinema, it's not really a villain. The overgrown fishy is eating people out of instinct, not malice.

If anyone in Jaws deserves to be labelled a villain, it's Mayor Larry Vaughn. Desperate to make money out of tourism, the sleazy mayor refuses to close the town's beaches.

Not only that, he encourages everyone to flock to the sea, knowing full well it's inhabited by a man-eating shark. When fishermen hook a dead tiger shark, Vaughn pretends it's the creature that terrorised Amity Island, despite the fact he knows the culprit is a Great White.

In Vaughn's mind, his actions are completely justified. After all, the town's revenue will dry up if Brody scares away the tourists with reports of a killer shark.

But do you know what else will cause the town to lose money? A killer shark! If Vaughn closed the beach long enough for Brody to dispose of the threat, he'd have nothing to worry about.
