10 Movie Villains Who Deserved MUCH WORSE

8. Anton Chigurh - No Country For Old Men

Miramax Films

As Anton Chigurh in the Coen Brothers' masterpiece No Country for Old Men, Javier Bardem gave not only the performance of his life, but one of the most chilling villainous portrayals in cinematic history. There is a reason the role earned him his only Academy Award to date.

Though ultimately the story isn't about Chigurh specifically - rather what he represented to Sheriff Bell's (Tommy Lee Jones) world - what he actually did on screen was heinous. He killed innocent people, he left their fates up to the flip of a coin, and he was terrifying and utterly remorseless of anything he did.

Even though she did absolutely nothing wrong, Carla Jean Moss (Kelly Macdonald) found herself on the wrong side of Chigurh's weapon simply because he had promised her husband he would hunt her down. He embodied a world becoming darker and more evil, and Anton was the reason Sheriff Bell had to wear a gun where the old Sheriffs before him didn't.

This isn't one of those stories where good triumphs over evil. In fact, it's quite the opposite, as though Chigurh suffered a broken arm in a car crash after killing Carla Jean, there were no actual consequences to his actions. He could have been in that car accident at any point, whereas in terms of law enforcement - where he could have easily been sent to the electric chair had he been caught - the credits rolled without him being reprimanded at all.
